ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — Nearly six months since Andrew Brown was shot and killed by Pasquotank deputies at his home, the fight for answers continues.

The media has continued its fight for the full release of body camera video and the federal lawsuit against law enforcement has created more questions about transparency in the Pasquotank County Sheriff's Office. Last week, Mayor Bettie Parker announced she won’t seek a third term.

The Pasquotank County native became the first female mayor of Elizabeth City in 2017. Before taking on the mayoral role, she held a seat as the county’s first elected African-American female commissioner. Now, she says the city has settled into a new normal and the strength she has seen in her community let her know it was the right time to leave.

"I see a difference in how people are connecting with one another, and we could be a much better people here in Elizabeth City if we stay open the feelings of those who have felt marginalized," she said.

Mayor Parker says her husband has been ill, and she's taking this time to be with family.  She says Elizabeth City is her home, and she'll be there for the community when needed.
