CRAVEN COUNTY, N.C. -- A prosthetic leg can cost up to $40,000 just for the limb.

  • East Carolina Brace and Limb has stepped up to create a prosthetic leg for 17-year-old Paige Winter--who was recently bitten by a shark at Fort Macon
  • Winter had her leg amputated and spent part of Tuesday in the operating room to close her wound
  • Mike Truesdale, CEO of East Carolina Brace and Limb, says getting a prosthetic limb is not a “one-and-done” kind of deal. Most amputees spend their life in and out of different sockets as their bodies grow and change.

That’s why East Carolina Brace and Limb has stepped up to create a prosthetic leg for 17-year-old Paige Winter--who was recently bitten by a shark at Fort Macon.

Winter had her leg amputated and spent part of Tuesday in the operating room to close her wound.

Mike Truesdale, CEO of East Carolina Brace and Limb, says getting a prosthetic limb is not a “one-and-done” kind of deal. Most amputees spend their life in and out of different sockets as their bodies grow and change.

Truesdale said his company is offering all the care she will need for free, and that includes state of the art bionic joints.

“This field of prosthetics and orthotics has blessed us so much that we just want the opportunity to give back,” said Truesdale.

A GoFundMe for Winter has raised more than $56,000 for her family since the incident on Sunday June 2.
