WILMINGTON N.C. -- Wilmington's Crime Lab will now be transferred over to New Hanover County. The city's chief, Ralph Evangelous, made the announcement Thursday.

The city struggled to pay for the crime lab through the years. Thirty agencies currently use it to examine evidence for criminal cases.
Although the details aren't worked out, the move could become official on July 1.
"We've gotten commitment from our manager, from the city manager, so I feel really good about it. We're excited to have another partnership,” said Evangelous.
The sheriff's office will manage the lab and New Hanover County would oversee its daily operations.
Wilmington police opened it back in 2008 as a model in hopes of creating a regional lab. It will stay in the current location on Bess Street.
