Emerald Isle Baptist Church served as a hub for resources and information following the hurricane, directing residents to contractors and accepting donations on behalf of the town.

After the storm, it raised nearly $40,000 for community members in need from donors all over the country.

Residents believe the extension is well-needed for Emerald Isle despite common misconceptions about beach living.

“Everybody seems to think that if you live in Emerald Isle or you can afford to live at the beach, then you can take care of yourself and you don’t have any problems," said Mike Taylor, Chairman of Emerald Isle Baptist Church's Ministry Council. "But here in our church we have seen church members that have had tremendous damage to their homes.”
