Republican Sheriff Chip Hughes takes the place of former democratic Sheriff Jerry Monette Monday.

Hughes says his four-year term will focus on improving school safety, addressing animal abuse, and working solutions to the opioid epidemic.

He plans to establish an advisory board of citizens to weigh in on the county's needs.

"The people of this county -- this is their office," said Sheriff Hughes. "They have just entrusted me to steer it. I look forward to working closely with the advisory board."

Hughes says he hopes to have a diverse advisory board of 20 to 30 citizens established by February.
