Police in Woodfin, a town just north of Asheville, said a body recovered from the French Broad River over the weekend has been identified.
Garren Gentry, 42, of Madison County, was reported missing by family in mid-December, according to police. He had last been seen on Union Road on Dec. 8.
Police have not yet indicated when Gentry died, but said they believe he has been in the water for some time.
Investigators said there are "no immediate and obvious signs or suspicion of foul play" at this time. The investigation into his death is ongoing, however.
Anyone with information about Gentry or his activities between the beginning of December and Sunday, May 4, 2025 is asked to call Woodfin detectives at 828-253-4887.
Police said two people fishing on the bank of the river saw the body Sunday afternoon. Once recovered, officers found he was wrapped in debris and covered in mud, officials said.
The body was sent to Raleigh for testing and an autopsy by the Medical Examiner’s Office.
