RALEIGH -- Animal lovers around the world are celebrating National Puppy Day with their furry four-legged friends while raising awareness about puppy mills and the need for adoptions.

Spectrum News anchor Caroline Blair sat down with Tami Radzai, Vice President of the Neuse River Golden Retriever Rescue, and some special dogs Coby and Remy. The nonprofit works primarily with golden retrievers who lose their homes for a number of reasons. The group pulls the animals out of shelters or works with owners on surrendering them so they can be given the proper love and medical attention the require.

Radzai says National Puppy Day is a great way to share pictures of your pets on social media, but more importantly raise awareness about puppy mills and their dangers, and raise awareness about the great need for adoption.

Neuse River Golden Retriever Rescue is hosting a local Golden Gala on April 21 at the Raleigh Country Club, the non-profits biggest fundraising event of the year. They will then converge on the Southern Women’s Show at the State Fairgrounds, for their Fido Fashion Show each day at 3 p.m.
