ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A Wayne County woman is doing her part to make sure Steven Amenhauser has a proper burial.
Amenhauser died after police say he was set on fire in his Lyell Avenue apartment. Two teenagers have been charged with murder following his death.
“I think, it’s just important we all come together and celebrate this man,” Danielle Kyper, of Ontario, in Wayne County said. “He doesn’t have anybody to do that for him.”
Kyper is doing that by raising money through GoFundMe. She said she was touched by Amenhausen’s tragic story.
“Just the story, you know, broke my heart to hear how this man died, alone in the hospital, said Kyper. “And then to find out he has no family.”
She made the first donation of $25, but the GoFundMe account has since raised more than $3,000 as of Thursday night.
“My original goal was $8,000 because I wanted to do the funeral, and that’s what it cost, and average funeral cost,” Kyper said.
She later found out Monroe County would cover funding for the burial service and would not accept money from GoFundMe. The Rochester Police Locust Club is working with the Monroe County Public Administrator's Office and Holy Apostles Church to arrange the services.
“I had to kind of switch things up,” said Kyper. “So I actually lowered the amount to $2,000 and decided to make it for a headstone, flowers, and whatever else I raised would go to the burn unit at Strong.”
The Wayne County woman has made contact with the cemetery, floral shop, and the people making the funeral plans for Amenhauser.
“It broke my heart, and just getting the community together, no matter who we are, where we live, what we do, just come together and be good people,” Kyper added.
Details on a burial service for Amenhauser have not been released yet.
