Each week, students at Benjamin Franklin Elementary School take time to learn what it means to be a gentleman.
It all started when physical education teacher Jeremiah Johnson realized there weren't a lot of male teachers in the school.
He quickly approached the principal about starting a club to help young boys with skills that will take them far beyond the classroom.
"As much as it might have been a need, it was a want for us to be able to connect with certain boys in our program and our school so that we could give them what we thought they needed to go into middle school and go into fifth grade and be leaders in our school district," said Johnson.
And just like that, "BF Gents" was born.
4th and 5th graders are taught everything from restaurant etiquette to dressing properly.
"I've been learning about how to be a gentleman," said 4th grader Leonel Zevallos-Ramos. "When I first came in here, I was a little bit scared, because I didnt know how to do this program."
On Thursday, they were given free dress shirts and ties.
"Being a gentleman is being nice to people, and if they get hurt, you can help them up and take them a nurse to get it fixed," said Zevallos-Ramos.
The program has become so succesful that other teachers in the school are noticing a change.
"They talked about things that they can do to be better, and then I watch them, and I get compliments from other teachers — 'so and so held the door for me.' ''This student who's a gent helped one of the girls who was on the playground.' 'They helped each other on the playground,'" said Johnson.
"It will help me to be a better person when I grow up," said Zevallos-Ramos.
The dress clothes were donated by the Brandon Youngstrom Foundation, which the school's principal is a board member of.
