We’ve finally experienced a few rather chilly days this winter, reminding us of how cold things can truly get. Hopefully, you’ve broken out all the key winter items to keep you warm.

But are these items working to their fullest potential? I'll give you the scoop on what materials to look for when buying winter gear.

What You Need To Know

  • Layers are key during the winter months

  • It is important that the first layer of clothing be made of a material that is good at keeping in body heat

  • The outer materials need to protect you from all weather conditions

Since I’ve lived in the Midwest my entire life, I’ve learned over the years what keeps you the warmest when you have to brave the bitter cold.

For starters, I always recommend layers. When the temperatures drop below zero, you can guarantee that I’m wearing a thermal long-sleeved shirt AND sweatshirt underneath that winter coat.

Did you know that the key to staying warm starts with that first layer? That’s why you’ll want to start with a fabric that will keep in your body heat, such as silk and polyester.

As for the outer layer, it’s all about protecting you from extreme weather conditions. You’ll want to find a coat that is both wind and waterproof. The one popular material that accomplishes both is called Gore-Tex.

But in the end, as long as you make sure to cover that exposed skin with a winter coat, hat, gloves and scarf, you should be just fine to participate in a snowball fight or hit the slopes.
