Cue the theme song to Frozen. If you want to build a snowman, Boone is the place to go!

What You Need To Know

  • January is traditionally the snowiest month of the year for the Piedmont and western NC

  • This month is on track to be in the Top 10 snowiest Januaries on record in Boone

  • Charlotte's average annual snowfall is 4.3" and the Queen City is behind

Boone has received 14.5" of snowfall so far this month, 6.6" more than normal up to this point in January.

In a typical January, Boone receives 10.1" and we’ve already surpassed that. The snowiest January on record took place in 1987 when Boone picked up 36" – three feet – of snowfall!

If January were to end today, January 2021 would tie for the 10th-snowiest on record in Boone.

And it looks like it may move up in rank. Accumulating snow is possible in Boone and above 3500 feet on Wednesday night. We’ll be fine-tuning those potential amounts on Spectrum News 1.

Charlotte, on the other hand, is lacking all the snow Boone has received.

The average snowfall for the month of January in the Queen City is 2.1", making January the snowiest month of the year, on average, for the Charlotte region.

This January, however, is sub-par. So far in 2021, Charlotte Douglas International has received 0.1" of snowfall, and the chance for snow is not in the forecast anytime soon.
