It has been an active spring severe weather season for the Carolinas, and the weather could remain active as Atlantic Hurricane Season begins June 1.

Despite a growing number of people getting vaccinated, storm preparation must still include precautions for the coronavirus.

As always, the top priority is to protect yourself and your family from a potential tornado. Even with the ongoing pandemic, many emergency leaders say you need to prepare to respond as you normally do in the event of severe weather.

That means when sheltering, find your safest spot in your home if possible. That means the lowest floor of your home, and the inner-most room.

Great examples of that are FEMA certified safe rooms, basements, or closets/bathrooms without windows.

If the safest place to go is a local storm shelter, leaders say to go to your storm shelter per usual.

While sheltering, continue to follow social distancing practices that we have come accustomed to over the past few weeks and months. When sheltering in a public shelter, be sure to wear gloves, protective face masks, try at best to stay six feet away from others, and wash your hands.

As hurricane season begins June 1, make sure you're ready now so you're ready to act if and when a tropical system threatens the Carolinas.

Create a plan or review your plan with everyone in your household. Be ready to act when needed. Make sure you're supplies are well stocked.

Supplies should include, but not limited to enough food and water for each person for at least three days. Copies of insurance documents and a first aid kit would be wise to have in a hurricane kit.
