CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- There are several watches and warnings in effect as storms hit the Charlotte area Thursday.

A strong cold front is passing through the area and some severe storms are present. In fact, areas along and to the southeast of I-85 are now at risk for severe weather. Damaging winds and flash flooding are threats Thursday, but a few tornadoes cannot be ruled out. There are several reports of one spotted in Gaston County.

Overall, winds will be rather gusty Thursday, with highs back in the mid to upper 60s.

The severe threat should come to an end by 6 p.m. or 7 p.m., leaving us with lingering rain showers into Thursday night. A few showers will be possible Friday morning, but we should start to see skies clear out some for the afternoon.

The mountains, however, will then be dealing with some upslope snow showers on the back side of this system, with 1"-2" possible, and heavier totals possible in the higher elevations. Temperatures will cool back down into the 40s and low 50s for highs.
