Our next system will spread in clouds and precip chances today.

For the Piedmont and coast, this is a chilly rain scenario, primarily this afternoon and evening in the Piedmont and this evening and tonight along the coast. However, there will probably be some reports of some sleet pellets initially as the rain moves into dry air and evaporation takes place. For any spot in the Piedmont that briefly sees some sleet pellets, just a novelty, nothing significant.

In the mountains, a period of freezing rain and sleet could cause some minor icing on elevated surfaces, but even there, just regular chilly rain by late today and this evening.

Any lingering showers near the coast will be gone by mid-morning Sunday, and sunshine will make its return.

The coldest air we've had in a while will then take hold Sunday night through Wednesday with highs and lows well below average for this time of year. Look for hard freezes across the entire state as well as lows in the mountains likely in the 10 to 15 degree range.
