There's no need to make a mad dash to the store for bread and milk, but the chances to see snow this weekend for at least parts of North Carolina are increasing.
A cold front will move through the state Friday bringing much colder air for the weekend. With that cold air in place, low pressure will track across the southeastern United States bringing precipitation to the Carolinas from Saturday night through Sunday morning.
The best chance to see snow falling will come from the mountains through central and northern North Carolina including Greensboro and Raleigh. Charlotte and Fayetteville may even see snow falling at times. The snow could be mixed with rain in some locations. Southeastern North Carolina including Wilmington and Jacksonville will likely see just a chilly rain.
It's still uncertain exactly how much moisture this weather system will have to work with, so it is still difficult to accurately predict precipitation amounts for this weekend.
We just had one of the warmest Februaries on record across the state and temperatures have been above average so far for the month of March. That means our ground temperatures are relatively warm for this time of the year. The warm ground will likely greatly limit accumulation amounts.
Any snow accumulation will be determined by the intensity of any snowfall. Light snow would just melt as it hits the ground. A heavy burst of snow could be enough to overcome the warm ground for at least some slushy accumulations on grassy and elevated surfaces. Major travel impacts are not anticipated.
A change in the track of this weekend's storm system could still change the expected weather in your area. Stay tuned to Weather on the 1s on Time Warner Cable News for updates.
