The North Carolina Turnpike Authority has a warning for toll customers about unauthorized payment vendors.

The agency says companies are targeting N.C. Quick Pass customers who do not have a pre-paid transponder by promising easier bill payments and charging a fee for their services. Officials say the companies are often delayed in making payments on behalf of the customer, however, which results in additional fees and penalties for the driver.

In December and January, the NCTA says more than 4,000 used one of these vendors and were subject to late payments and incurred fees.

The NCTA has taken legal action against these companies, according to a release, and urges customers to only make payments directly through the N.C. Quick Pass website or customer service center.

“NC Quick Pass is committed to providing drivers with efficient, friendly, and reliable customer service,” Angela Queenland, manager of customer service at N.C. Quick Pass, said in a release. “Customers can avoid fraud, potential late-fees, and save 35% on all future tolls in North Carolina by ordering a pre-paid NC Quick Pass transponder. Our customer service team is also available to work with drivers to avoid potential late fees caused by unauthorized payment vendors.”
