CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The North Carolina Department of Transportation and the City of Charlotte is moving forward with plans for a multimodal transportation hub.

The new Charlotte Gateway Station is scheduled to open to the public in 2025. Officials say bus, streetcar, taxi and ridesharing, bicycle and pedestrian, and passenger rail services will be brought together in downtown Charlotte thanks to the new station.

Officials say Phase 1 of the project is being led by NCDOT’s Rail Division. It includes the planning, design and construction of the new Gateway Station and has a completion target date of 2023.

Construction on the project began in 2018.

So far, canopy foundations and several bridges supporting the railroad tracks are nearly finished, NCDOT said in a release. Work is also progressing on the platform, concourse wall and station baggage ramps.

Phase 2 of the project will be led by the City of Charlotte with developer Gateway Partners for the large mixed-use development and station.
