CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Carolina Panthers released quarterback Baker Mayfield Monday, according to the a news release by the team.

Mayfield chalked up just one win in his first five starts record as the starter this season and was benched twice.

During his 13 weeks with the franchise, the Heisman trophy winner connected on 58% of his passes for 1,313 yards, six touchdowns and six interceptions, according to the Panthers' website.

He was traded from the Cleveland Browns to Carolina in March for a condition 2024 fifth-round draft pick.

If a team were to claim Mayfield, they would also be on the hook for his remaining salary, giving some relief to the Panthers. But if a team put in a claim for Mayfield and he clears waivers, the Panthers would need to pay him the remaining amount. Mayfield will be a free agent in March.

Sam Darnold will start against the Seahawks Sunday afternoon, according to a release from the Panthers Monday.
