WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- At the age of 15, most kids are excited about starting High School and obtaining a driver's permit.

Tyler Bailey is preparing to leave home and play basketball at a national powerhouse.

Oak Hill Academy is well known in basketball circles. Head coach Steve Smith turned the boarding school into one of the best amateur basketball programs in the country.

Nationally ranked players from all over the world attend the school in Mouth of Wilson, Virginia with dreams of playing Division 1 basketball.

Bailey will add his name to an impressive list of names to play for the legendary coach.

NBA superstars Kevin Durant and Carmelo Anthony, as well as former UNC All-American Jerry Stackhouse suited up for the academy. Former Duke stars Harry Giles and Quinn Cook played ball there too.

Bailey knows the history of Oak Hill and knows it's rare for students to go to the boarding school as freshmen. Most who attend the school do so after making a name for themselves in high school and join the program as upperclassmen.

Bailey will be the first since Giles from the Triad to go to Oak Hill.

USA Today named Oak Hill as the number three basketball program of the decade in 2017.

Smith has over 1,000 wins in his coaching career, and he has high hopes for the 15-year-old from Winston-Salem.

"We're hoping that he's going to play minutes for us this year," Smith says.

The incoming freshman practices with his father, Aaron Bailey, who played college basketball at St. Paul's from 1997-2001.

An Assistant Principal at Southeast Middle School, the elder Bailey enjoys helping his son achieve his goals on the basketball court.

"It's a lot of fun," Aaron says. I didn't have a father growing up to work out with me on a daily basis so I count it all a blessing."

Oak Hill is replacing eight seniors from last year's team that finished 36-3. Bailey hopes to contribute to a storied basketball program and follow in the shoes of the many stars who've donned the Warriors uniform.
