CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Greg Olsen and the Carolina Panthers announced Thursday that a mutual agreement to part ways had been reached.

Olsen released his statement on Twitter saying in part, "Today, I had the opportunity to sit down with Marty Hurney and have a great conversation regarding my future with the organization. The team and I are both on the same page that it is best we go in different directions for now."

The 34-year-old's future became uncertain in 2017 and 2018 after the veteran tight end struggled with foot injuries. In 2019 however, Olsen seemed to be back to his old self. He played 14 games in which he reeled in 52 receptions for 597 yards and two touchdowns.

In 2011, Olsen joined the Panthers after spending his first four years in the NFL in Chicago. The Bears selected him in the first round of the 2007 draft, and then traded him to Carolina for a third-round pick four years later.

Over the course of his 13 year career, Olsen has made 718 catches and gained 8,444 yards. He is ranked fifth all-time among tight ends in each of those categories.

"On the field, I will always cherish the nine seasons we shared together. The wins, the losses, standing at midfield holding the Halas Trophy as NFC champs. The reality of going to the Super Bowl was beyond words, as was the disappointment of falling short," Olsen said in his statement.
