A man is dead after being shot by police during a fight late Thursday in Catawba County, according to the Newton Police Department.
Police tried to stop Camden Childers, 21, of Stanley, North Carolina, shortly before midnight on Highway 70, according to a release. Childers was accused of failing to display a registration plate on his motorcycle, speeding and reckless driving.
Childers failed to stop, police said, and led officers on a chase into Conover. After a collision with a patrol car, Childers got into a “brief physical altercation,” a release said, in which he was shot.
He was taken to Catawba Valley Medical Center for treatment but later died.
Police have not said whether Childers was armed.
Newton police said the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure. The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating.
