The search continues for the suspect in a shooting on the Winston-Salem State University campus Friday night that left one man hurt, according to police.
After someone called in the shooting, the campus was placed on lockdown around 6:30 p.m. Friday, police said.
Winston-Salem police went to the Rams Commons 3 residence hall at 601 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive to find the victim in a study area. He was taken to the hospital and is expected to be OK.
After investigating, it was discovered the male victim was not a student. The lockdown was lifted after it was determined the suspect was no longer on campus, and it’s believed that this was an isolated situation, according to authorities.
Winston-Salem State University Housing and Residence Life said it has suspended visitation for non-students until further notice.
"At this time, the suspect remains at large. The Winston-Salem City Police Department (WSPD), the lead investigating agency, has identified the suspect as Ja’lon Stallings, a current WSSU student," Bonita Brown, the university's chancellor, said Monday afternoon.
Brown added the university will deal with Stallings' alleged actions in addition to the criminal charges he faces.
"While this incident is both troubling and unacceptable, we are grateful for the quick actions of our campus police and local authorities," Brown said. "We remain committed to fostering a safe and supportive campus environment."
Law enforcement officials continue to investigate and ask anyone with information on the shooting Friday to call 336-773-7700.
