ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Clothes, formula and diapers are just a few of the items mothers use a lot. But moms like Jenna Hine and Jamie Williams have found the most useful item during motherhood is support.
“A friend of mine experienced postpartum psychosis,” Kindred Connection co-founder Jenna Hine said. “My friend got the support she needed. We were like, 'you know what? Let's sort of make this come to fruition. And wouldn't it be nice if you could go to one space and find all of the services that are available to the community?' ”
The goal was to create a one-stop shop for all needs.
The founders of the group Kindred Connection wanted to bring resources to families in need — resources they felt they needed the most during their own pregnancies.
“A lot of it led from our own experiences and the lack of support and the support we wish we would have had,” Kindred Connection co-founder Jamie Williams said, "and just really wanting to create what didn't exist in a way that would help other mothers and families. I didn’t know how important that was until after my first baby.”
Those resources range from therapy and coaching to Joan's closet clothing drives and even connecting with doulas through Royalty Birth Services.
“Jenna, I was actually her doula for both her babies,” Royalty Birth Services owner Phyllis Sharp said. “We all had the same vision. Whether it's emotionally, physically, we just want them to make sure they get what they need.”
Its specialists work towards the same goal — to support the perinatal community at every stage.
“Being pregnant and being comfortable often don't go hand in hand,” Hine said. “And I just wanted to do whatever, whatever it is that I could do to support other people. It really can be lifesaving. So I just think that it's so important to offer what we do to the community and make sure people know that we're out there.”
“They say it takes a village to raise a child, but it takes a village to support a mom, too,” Williams said. “So we get to be a part of that village.”
