A new bill making its way through the North Carolina legislature would ban children ages 13 and under from having a social media account.
The bill says 14- and 15-year-olds would be allowed social media accounts, but only with parental consent.
Under the bill, if passed, accounts belonging to minors under the age of 14 would be deleted. The account holder would be given a 30 day notice prior to the account being closed.
Accounts of teens ages 14 and 15 would also be deleted if parental consent for the account is not provided, or if the teen’s parent or guardian requested cancellation of the account.
Lawmakers say House Bill 301, which was introduced last week, has already been referred to a judiciary committee.
