Multiple people died Saturday afternoon when a single-engine plane crashed into a wooded area near an airport in Kill Devil Hills, along North Carolina’s Outer Banks.

The crash occurred around 5 p.m. close to the Wright Brothers National Memorial’s First Flight Airport, according to the National Park Service.

Eyewitnesses said they saw the plane trying to land at the airport. However, the plane crashed and caught fire, and several agencies helped extinguish it, the park service said in a news release.

“The National Transportation Safety Board, an independent federal agency charged with investigating civil aviation accidents in the United States, will investigate the incident. The Federal Aviation Administration has also been notified,” park service officials said.

The Wright Brothers National Memorial, near the airport, will be closed Sundon ay, Sept. 29, and their Facebook page will reflect updates.
