A second ocean-front home collapsed in Rodanthe Friday shortly after another home collapsed in the area.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore said the second house collapsed in G A Kohler Court at about 9:15 p.m. The one-story unoccupied house was damaged earlier when another home collapsed

"The same house that sustained damages as a result of the first house collapse of the day—had collapsed and apparently washed out into the ocean before the bulk of it returned to the beach," park officials said.

Officials with Cape Hatteras National Seashore are urging all visitors to "avoid all beaches in Rodanthe."

This is the ninth house to collapse on the Outer Banks within the past four years, and the fourth to collapse this year, park officials said.

Seashore visitors, especially at the north end of Rodanthe and for miles to the south, are urged by park officials to stay out of the water and wear hard-soled shoes when walking on the beach to avoid injuries from "hazardous floating debris and nail-ridden wooden debris."

Rodanthe is a small community of mostly vacation homes on a thin strip of land in North Carolina's Outer Banks. Sea level rise and erosion has forced some homes to be moved away from the water while others have collapsed.

Crews, includng National Park Service staff, will be assisting with cleaning up the debris. Beaches in the area may close temporarily.
