A man was hit and killed by a Norfolk Southern freight train near downtown Durham Tuesday morning, closing multiple roads for several hours during the morning rush hour, according to police.
It happened at about 5:20 a.m. near the intersection of South Alston Avenue at East Pettigrew Street, just east of downtown. Authorities identified Ronnie Earl Shaw, 42, as the victim Tuesday afternoon.
Police closed East Pettigrew Street at South Driver Street, South Plum Street and Ramseur Street during the investigation. Those areas were reopened around 9 a.m.
According to police, EMS took the man to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries. No passengers were on board at the time of the incident, officials said.
Drivers may still encounter delays when traveling through the area as police continue their investigation.
