A man is accused of intentionally setting a fire at a retirement home community in Charlotte early Tuesday morning, causing around $15,000 worth of damage. No one was hurt in the fire, officials said.
The fire was set just after 2:30 a.m. at the Barringer Gardens retirement homes on Dr. Carver Road off West Boulevard.
Johnny Mack was charged with first-degree arson and malicious damage by use of an explosive or incendiary device to occupied property in the case.
Charlotte Fire officials say the fire sent smoke into the hallways and activated the retirement home's sprinkler system. Mack was identified quickly as a suspect in the case, Charlotte Fire officials said, and he was arrested by Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.
Charlotte fire officials said this is the second arson case in a week where fire officials provided evidence leading to an arrest.
A possible motive has not been released.
