A man was shot and killed after he tried breaking into a home Sunday morning, deputies say. The Greene County Sheriff's Office said the man fought with officers, but did not say he had a weapon.

Deputies responded to Judge Hardy Street in Maury just after 10 a.m.. The sheriff's office said a victim said he ran from his house where the crime was happening, saying the man was still there.

Greene County Sherrif’s Deputies and Snow Hill Police both went to the scene, where they say they found 54-year-old Willie Thomas Lovett inside the victim’s home stealing property.

Deputies attempted to arrest Lovett, but he fought back and an officer shot him, the sheriff's office said. EMS treated Lovett, but he died from his injuries, officials said. 

Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene.

The shooting is being investigated by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, which is standard procedure.
