Police shot a man during a standoff in Newton Monday night, leaving him in critical condition, according to the Newton Police Department.

It happened just after 11:30 p.m. at the Catawba Pines Apartments off East 1st Street. Police say they received a 911 hang-up call from the area and arrived to find “numerous” people in the parking lot, including one man who was holding a gun.

Police say while trying to get the man to drop the gun, he fired several shots at officers.

“After a brief standoff, officers returned fire,” police said, hitting the man.

The man was taken to Catawba Valley Medical Center by ambulance before being flown to Atrium Health Medical Center in Charlotte. He is listed in critical condition.

Police have not released the man's name or the names of the officers involved.

The officers have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure for a shooting involving police.

The State Bureau of Investigations is assisting in the investigation.

Anyone with additional information about the shooting is asked to call the Newton Police Department at 828-465-7430.
