On-duty CMPD officer died by suspected suicide, chief says

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officer died by a self-inflicted wound Monday, police said in a statement.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police and MEDIC first responders arrived at the 7300 block of Steele Creek Rd, just south of Charlotte-Douglass International Airport.

Intersections were shut down to get the officer to the hospital quickly.

Preliminary information indicates one CMPD officer suffered from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, was transported to a local hospital and succumbed to his injuries.

They added they are not looking for any suspects, and the public isn’t in danger, but that roads would be closed for some time.

CMPD didn’t clarify if the officer was on duty at the time.
