Two people were hit and killed by trains overnight in North Carolina, one in Burlington and the other in Charlotte, officials said.
A man was hit and killed by a train in Burlington Thursday evening, police said, closing the railway for three hours.
It happened just after 8 p.m. west of York Road toward Oak Avenue.
The man was identified by police as 47-year-old Daniel Wagoner, a Burlington resident. Officials pronounced him dead at the scene.
According to reports, Wagoner was walking east on the tracks when the train, traveling in the opposite direction, hit him.
“The train was traveling under track speed and attempted to alert Mr. Wagoner using the train horn,” police said.
The case is still being investigated.
In Charlotte, police are still investigating after another person was also struck shortly after midnight.
Amtrak train 79 was traveling from New York City to Charlotte when officials say the train hit a pedestrian around 12:42 a.m. on the 8100 block of Old Concord Road in Charlotte, according to police and Amtrak officials.
Police said 43-year-old Jerome Lydell Nelson died at the scene.
None of the 106 passengers or crew onboard were injured, Amtrak said.
