Summer officially began on Thursday, and right on cue, the hottest weather that we've felt so far this year is ahead for the first weekend of summer.
By Saturday and Sunday, temperatures in much of North Carolina will top out in the mid to upper 90s. Areas around the mountains and the beaches will not be as hot.
The humidity will also rise along with the temperatures. That will make the weekend afternoons feel more like it's 100 degrees or hotter in much of the state.
When the heat index, or feels like temperature, reaches over 100, the heat becomes more dangerous because we all become more susceptible to heat-related illnesses.
This summer's new heat risk tool from NOAA and the CDC shows major impacts from the heat are expected in North Carolina this weekend.
That means the level of heat will affect anyone without effective cooling and an adequate hydration.
Outdoor weekend plans will be best in the morning to avoid the hottest part of the day.
The weekend's hot weather may just be a taste of what's to come through next week. Highs are forecast to reach the 90s outside of the mountains through next week with the heat index around or hotter than 100 many afternoons.
