RALEIGH, N.C. — Memorial Day is just a few weeks away, and in Raleigh members of the community are getting ready for the holiday.
On Thursday a national nonprofit called Carry The Load stopped in Raleigh as part of its Memorial Day weekend mission.
“We are currently on the way to the [Raleigh] National Cemetery," said Emilie Andrews, social medial coordinator for Carry The Load.
She led a group proudly marching with the U.S. flag to their destination.
“We like to go through significant places, especially ones that have national cemeteries, kinda get a back story of the people that passed before us," Andrews said.
Carry The Load hopes to restore the true meaning of Memorial Day by connecting Americans with those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
“Freedom doesn't come free, we have to pay for it. Our freedom was paid for, and they wrote that check in blood," Andrews said.
It's the 14th year Carry The Load has done a relay.
Anyone can join the group on a national relay, covering 20,000 miles, 48 states and visiting over 30 Veterans Affairs National Cemeteries.
The final stop is in Dallas on Memorial Day weekend.
“I think it's important for people to remember the true meaning of Memorial Day," Andrews said.
People of all ages, interested in this relay, are eligible to register.
