JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. — Eight children were hospitalized Friday afternoon after a school bus crashed following a hit-and-run south of Smithfield, the N.C. State Highway Patrol said.

Trevor Elijah Jordan Grice, 30, of Smithfield, failed to yield before turning onto Webb Mill Road from Crocker Lane and struck the bus, Highway Patrol Sgt. Marcus Bethea said in a news release late Friday.

Grice’s Nissan Altima overturned, and Grice fled on foot, Bethea said.

The Johnston County Public Schools bus, which was carrying 13 children, veered off the road and over a ditch. Eight children were taken to a hospital with injuries that weren’t life-threatening, Bethea said.

Grice later was captured and faces charges including felony hit-and-run, no liability insurance, driving while license revoked and unsafe movement.
