ELON, N.C. — Construction is underway at Elon University as it prepares to expand on-campus housing next semester.

  • Elon University will add 90 new residential rooms for juniors and seniors this fall

  • The school will also offer six new residential homes as a part of a new sustainable housing community

  • Of the more than 6,400 undergraduate students attending the college, about 70 have some type of university housing

The new East Neighborhood Commons building will include gathering spaces, office spaces and an apartment for an onsite faculty member.

It will also be home to 90 residential rooms for juniors and seniors when it opens this fall.

Senior Jessie Jennings has lived in university housing all four years and said it helps students connect. 

“Just being close by is super nice. On-campus housing helps foster a sense of community,” she said. 

The school is also adding 12 sustainable homes as part of its EcoVillage immersive living experience. 

Students and faculty in the environmental science program helped start building the first home last year. 

Each home will have two residential rooms, one bathroom and spaces to gather and prepare food.

They will also have unique environmentally friendly features like rainwater collection systems and solar panels. 

Elon public information officer Owen Covington said the new community will help students' campus living experience to reflect what they are studying in class.

"It will be for students with academic studies or their extracurricular interest that want to live that sustainable lifestyle more fully,” Covington said. 

Six of the homes will be complete by fall and the next six in fall 2025.
