RALEIGH, N.C. — Carolina Hurricanes legend Justin Williams became the fifth player to be inducted into the team's Hall of Fame Monday as the team hosted the Los Angeles Kings in PNC Arena.
Williams joins Ron Francis, current coach Rod Brind’Amour, Glen Wesley and last year's inductee, Cam Ward, in the team's Hall Of Fame. Williams and Ward are the team's only elected members to the group as the other three players were automatically inducted due to having their jersey numbers retired by the team.
Williams tallied 316 points (128 goals and 188 assists) in 449 regular-season games with Carolina over eight seasons. He added 26 points in 47 playoff games.
Williams finished tied for third on the team in playoff scoring during Carolina’s Stanley Cup run in 2006 and scored the empty-net goal to finish the Hurricanes’ Cup-clinching, Game 7 win over the Edmonton Oilers.
He re-signed with Carolina as a free agent on July 1, 2017 and was named the eighth captain in Hurricanes history ahead of his second season back with the team, ultimately leading Carolina to its first Stanley Cup playoff berth in 10 years in 2019 and establishing the team as a winner again.
"This organization is very important to me, and it's very important that this team is good for a long time and pushes toward 'what it means to be a Hurricane' type thing," Williams said. "The best thing about it is there's history. ... When the team first came here it was 'be the history' and now you want to be a part of history. That says a lot about hockey now in North Carolina."
Between his two stints with the Hurricanes, Williams spent time with both Washington and Los Angeles, capturing two Stanley Cups with the Kings, the team who visited the Hurricanes Monday night. The Kings defeated the Hurricanes 5-2.
