The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said officers have been focused more this year on breaking up these street takeovers, where drivers show off their cars by drifting and doing burnouts.

So far this year, CMPD said officers have towed 94 cars, arrested 29 people and cited 135. They have also seized 17 guns at the events, police said.

"Officers observed multiple individuals engaging in reckless driving during these meetups," police said in a news release.

Many of the people participating in the street takeovers were from outside of Charlotte, according to CMPD. More charges and citations could be coming from the events over the weekend, police said.

Charlotte police are asking the public to help crack down on these meetups by reporting them to 911.
