It was a wild week in Washington.

Just three days after Congress avoided a government shutdown, the House stripped Kevin McCarthy of his speakership.

Rep. Jim Jordan and Majority Leader Steve Scalise are running for the Speaker of the House position, and Rep. Kevin Hern of Oklahoma is considering his own bid.

Former President Donald Trump has endorsed Jordan, but numerous Republican lawmakers have also thrown their support behind Scalise.

In North Carolina, Rep. Dan Bishop is supporting Jordan. On Friday he posted on X: "Jim is for the country over Washington. He knows the hour is late, and the dangers are real and imminent. In a town that tends to tarnish and corrupt everything in sight, Jim Jordan's core is solid and genuine."

Speaker candidates are expected to address House Republicans in a forum Tuesday, Oct. 10.

Until the House can settle on a new Speaker, Rep. Patrick McHenry of North Carolina will be serving as Acting Speaker.

He was put into the position of acting Speaker under a House rule written after 9/11. He was at the top of a secret list of successors Kevin McCarthy had drafted soon after he was elected Speaker in January.

While lawmakers can continue with committee meetings under McHenry it doesn't appear the position allows him to put legislation on the floor.
