DURHAM, N.C. – More than 40 suspects are facing charges after hundreds of motorcycle, ATV and dirt bike riders took over streets in Chapel Hill, Durham and Raleigh in June, police say.
Forty-three suspects have been identified in two days of reckless riding on public streets and highways in the Triangle on June 3 and 4, according to a news release from the Durham Police Department.
When officers confronted more than 200 riders June 4 near Garrett Road and Hope Valley Road in Durham, they tried to surround officers, spit on officers, ran over one officer’s foot with a motorcycle and damaged a police vehicle, authorities stated.
Durham officers worked with Raleigh and Chapel Hill police and the Wake County Sheriff’s Office in a task force in Operation Dismount to curtail illegal dirt bike activity.
Seven of the suspects charged in the June incidents are Durham residents, but many of the others don’t live in the cities affected, authorities stated. Several are from as far as South Florida and Maryland.
They face charges including operating an ATV on a street, reckless driving, unregistered motor vehicle, no operator’s license and misdemeanor riot.
Of the 43 suspects, 41 are adults and two are juveniles; charges against one of the juveniles are pending.
Durham police have set up a web page to report illegal dirt bike activity.
