CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police shot and wounded a woman during a welfare check Monday night in the Independence Division of Charlotte.

Officers were called to the scene along Krefeld Glen Drive off Independence Boulevard at about 6:30 p.m.

A person inside fired a shot as police moved closer to the apartment, according to a statement by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

As police went inside the apartment, they shot a woman who tried reaching for a gun, disregarding their commands, authorities say. Officers then waited for a SWAT team, which arrived at about 9:15 p.m.

Medic took the woman to the hospital with at least one gunshot wound. A child was also found unharmed, according to officials.

The incident shut down East Independence Freeway at Krefeld Drive for a time.

CMPD officials urged everyone to steer clear of the area Monday night.

The North Carolina Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation. Police say the officer involved in the shooting was placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure.

Anyone with additional information about the case is asked to call detectives at 704-432-TIPS or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
