KINSTON, N.C. — When you typically think of baseball, you think of peanuts and hot dogs. At the Down East Wood Ducks, they have barbecue.
What You Need To Know
- Barbecue served at the Down East Wood Ducks games comes from Kings Barbecue
- They put barbecue on everything - hot dogs, nachos, sandwiches and more
- The barbecue concession items are only found at the main concession stand in the stadium
- Their next home game is Saturday July 14
Concessions supervisor Andre Clark has been a part of the concessions stand crew for 10 years.
“It's great because everybody loves Kings Barbecue around here. So bang bang nachos consist of nacho cheese and barbecue. Most of our menus consist of barbecue, which is a great thing because you can't get enough barbecue around here,” Clark said.
Clark says he was drawn to work at the concession stand because he wanted a challenge.
“Because working here, you got to have some tough skin. You get people of all kind, of all characters, which is still fun, though. Atmosphere, great food activity, and people just love baseball,” Clark said.
Clark says while everyone comes to watch baseball, the real win comes from the food.
“It's the barbecue. I think it's the barbecue. And I think because you could get so much that they can share with their spouse or their children. Because I've seen a family of four get two, and be full for the rest of the night. So I think it's going to the barbecue,” Clark said.
He says the secret to why the barbecue is so good is that it’s the perfect mix of vinegar and sauce, and it’s put on just about anything.
“It's about half a half. It's more sauce than vinegar, so you don't have too much of each. So right on that borderline of complete, but you don't have to add nothing,” Clark said.
Although, people debate over their favorite style of North Carolina barbecue, Clark says you won’t find a better concession stand in baseball.
“I don't care where they’re at, they come to this concession stand. They eat. They love it. We have the best around here. And the people in here are absolutely wonderful,” Clark said.
