WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Fans wished the Wake Forest baseball team well as it left for Omaha, Nebraska Wednesday morning.

The Demon Deacons, who are ranked No. 1 in the country, will play in the College World Series for the first time since 1955. Wake Forest opens by playing Stanford at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Before getting on the bus, Wake Forest Coach Tom Walter and the players took pictures with fans and thanked them for their support.

Walter, who won the ACC coach of the year award, said he couldn’t be more proud of his team.

“I can't even contain myself. I'm so proud,” he said.

The College World Series will run through June 26.
