Fifty people have signed up to earn their certification, officials said.

A recent donation from a man saved by CPR helped buy eight new practice dummies for the class, all of varying ages and skin colors.

“It’s a way for me to do something to do my part. And I have never taken CPR training either so I’m signed up to take it, and I’ll try to encourage everybody I can to take it,” explained Greensboro resident John Lowe.

Lowe said YMCA Exercise and CPR Instructor Cindy Barbour rescued him by performing the procedure, and this donation is a way to pay it forward.

"Had she not been there, I probably would not have survived. So I think it’s very important that more people know so of course, there’s a greater chance that more people can survive if something like this were to happen," Lowe said.

“If performed immediately, CPR can double or triple the chance of survival from an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest,” according to the American Heart Association.

The classes for this month are already full. YMCA of Greensboro says they will offer them again next year.
