APEX, N.C. — A State Bureau of Investigation agent fatally shot a man suspected of shoplifing Tuesday, according to Apex police.
The shooting happened around 5:30 p.m. outside the Academy Sports store on Pine Plaza Drive.
Police say two suspects, a man and a woman suspected of shoplifting, were running from the store when they encountered SBI Agent Denzel Ward, 29, in the parking lot.
Ward shot the man, identified as 18-year-old Dayve Sanchez, according to police. Sanchez later died at the hospital.
Investigators say a gun was on the ground next to Sanchez after the shooting.
The woman was not injured, but police say she was being evaluated at a local hospital. She has not yet been formally charged.
“Due to this being a law enforcement related shooting involving SBI personnel, in consultation with District Attorney Freeman, the Apex Police Department is handling the investigation into this shooting,” the department said in a statement.
