SURRY COUNTY, N.C. — The Mount Airy/Surry County Airport recently started work on three new million-dollar projects.

The largest of the projects is a new terminal for corporate and private clients.

What You Need To Know

  • The Mount Airy/Surry County Airport is expanding with three new million-dollar projects

  • The airport is getting another corporate hanger and completing a parallel taxiway which will increase safety for pilots

  • The general aviation airport is also building a new terminal, complete with a pilot's lounge and restaurants for its corporate and private clients

The state funded the $4 million project, and it is on schedule to be complete by the end of 2024.

“We think it’s just going to be an exceptional place, and it’s what this airport needs,” said Mount Airy/Surry County Airport Manager George Carter.

The airport is also getting another corporate hanger and completing a parallel taxiway that Carter said will increase safety for pilots.

“We will finish it going south another 800 feet, and large planes won’t have to back taxi on the runway, and they are able to have a full taxi way,” Carter explained.

The state also funded most of the $1 million taxi runway completion project, while Surry County Commissioners funded the $1.5 million corporate hanger.

Carter said the hanger will be complete by July, and they already have a tenant waiting to park its plane.

MWK came in second for economic output among 66 other general aviation airports around the state.

The State of Aviation Report released in January placed the airport’s economic impact at more than $739 million last year.
