In Nashville, people are still reeling from the Covenant School tragedy.
In Winston-Salem last week, the community went through a scare after the Forsyth Community College campus went into lockdown following a report of a shooting.
The Winston-Salem Police Department later reported a high school student shot himself in the hand on campus while on a visit.
One school owner in Huntersville is trying to answer the question, "how do we keep our kids safe?"
Kyshia Brassington is opening Community Preschool of Huntersville later this year.
Currently, it’s under construction.
Brassington says she’s designing a school with enhanced security measures to better protect students.
“And it’s really up to us as adults to protect and take care of them and that is number one priority at our facility,” she said.
Amid the recent shootings, she’s doubling down on those efforts and adding even more protection. She’s directed the builder to wall up additional windows.
“[We] have security windows that you can see out, but you can’t see in,” Brassington said. “These are security measures that we actually took throughout the school, is limiting the number of windows for visual capabilities in the classroom.”
She’s now also installing extra security doors.
“I wanted a secondary barrier getting to the back hallways with the children, so we did ask our builder to install security doors at both of the hallways in the entrance area,” she said.
The building’s back faces the road — that’s intentional, too.
“It’s turned in an L-shape, which protects our children on two different sides completely for the playground area with the children playing outside,” she said. “Also, when you come outside, there is a fence that goes all the way around the building. So every exterior door opens up into a fenced in area.”
Finally, she adds, there will be security cameras around the building and people can only enter if they have an appointment.
Brassington says that enrollment will begin soon, and the school will open in July.
