FORSYTH COUNTY, N.C. — Classes were canceled after a shooting was reported on the main campus of Forsyth Tech Community College on Thursday morning, the Winston-Salem Police Department says.
An 18-year-old high school student attending an event at Forsyth Tech shot himself in the hand in a restroom on campus about 10:10 a.m., police Capt. Shelley Lovejoy said Thursday evening in a briefing. The student, Shannon Howard James Pitts of Winston-Salem Preparatory Academy, suffered wounds that were not life-threatening.
Campus police responded the gunshot, and city police received multiple calls reporting the shooting.
The campus was placed on lockdown and students were told to shelter in place as officers investigated, according to school officials.
Just after 11:45 a.m., police tweeted there was no active shooter on campus, and that there were no other threats to any other schools in the area.
Classes were canceled, and students, faculty, staff and visitors were allowed to leave after 1 p.m.
Pitts was taken to a hospital, police said.
The school is on Silas Creek Parkway in Winston-Salem.
