CHARLOTTE, N.C. — It may seem like COVID-19 is in our rear-view mirror with the three-year anniversary recently passing. But scammers won’t let go so easily. If you find yourself in a time crunch and need a COVID-19 test, don’t fall into the trap of getting the most convenient test — even if the opportunity comes to you.

What You Need to Know

The federal government provides free COVID-19 tests on covid.gov/tests

Scammers are sending phishing emails offering fake free tests in exchange for your personal information

The Better Business Bureau says con artists want to sell your info on the dark web

The Better Business Bureau says scammers are sending emails and texts offering free COVID-19 tests.

In this case, they aren’t after your money. Tom Bartholomy, president and CEO of the BBB, says they’re looking to steal your identity.

“There’s a profile. Scammers have a profile on you. They have a profile on me,” he said. “And, they’re just trying to fill that profile out, so that it’s more valuable, so that they can sell your information and my information on the dark web at a higher price.”

The federal government is still providing free tests, but you have to pick those up either at your local pharmacy or by visiting covid.gov/tests

The BBB says you can avoid this scam altogether by keeping the following in mind:

  • Buy tests from your local pharmacy
  • Don’t give in to the pressure
  • Be wary of unsolicited offers
  • Don’t click on links in strange texts or emails
