Charlotte FC's home opener is Saturday

They will play the New England Revolution

Super fans are excited for the first game

Fans and supporter groups are gearing up, such as super fans Chico Sanchez, Hector Cortes and Raphael Tehandon.

Sanchez has become a local celebrity, publicly known as “La Muerte.”

He wears a Día de los Muertos mask to pay homage to his Mexican roots.

"Normally when I got to Mexico games, I dress up with a skull mask like this, but with the green, white, red colors, and once I found out that we were having a team here, it was something that I had to bring to Charlotte,” he said.

Cortes is publicly known as “Sombrero Man.”

That’s because about 10 years ago, he wore a sombrero to a Charlotte Hornets game.

“We Mexicans, whenever there is a national team from Mexico of any sport, we always take one of these sombreros to represent our country,” Cortes said.

He says he was shown on the Jumbotron, and people began recognizing him.

He started wearing the hat to every Hornets game, then Carolina Panthers games and now Charlotte FC games.

He can’t wait for the first game, because it brings back memories of his childhood.

“Growing up in Mexico and going to football games for Chivas, I am from Guadalajara, now that I have that here, in my backyard, this is amazing,” he said.

Tehandon is the President of the Queen’s Firm, a Charlotte FC support group.

He says last year was an amazing first season.

“I had goosebumps. It was just chills all over. It was just so exciting,” Tehandon said. "Especially they packed the house out so just seeing everybody come out for that, it was amazing.”

He hopes people pack the house for the home opener.

“I am ready for it,” he said.

The game begins at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
